Clay Jenkins
Clay Jenkins' career as a jazz trumpet player has covered a wide range of musical experiences. He has toured and recorded with the orchestras of Stan Kenton, Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Harry James, Jim Widner, John Clayton, and Jeff Hamilton. He has also performed and recorded with such artists as Billy Harper, Lyle Mayes, Milt Jackson, Peter Erskine, Dr. John, Joey Sellers, Bob Sheppard, Bill Perkins, Kim Richmond, Joe La Barbera, Billy Childs, Steve Hughton, Johnny Mandel, Lennie Niehaus, Miki Coltrane, Ernestine Anderson and Diana Krall.
Clay is a member of the adjunct faculty at several universities and schools in Los Angeles including California Institute of the Arts, California State University Northridge, and University of Southern California. He has also served as co-chairman of the theory department at the Colburn School for the Performing Arts. Clay's education includes a Bachelor's Degree in Music Theory from the University of North Texas, and a Master's Degree in Jazz Studies from U.S.C. Clay became interest in jazz education as a performing player when he was on staff at the "Stan Kenton Orchestra in Residence" programs. He is on staff at the Jim Widner Summer Jazz Camps, and has performed and given clinics all over the United States and abroad, in Japan, Germany, Korea, Russia, and South Africa. Clay is now Associate Professor of Jazz Trumpet at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y.
Clay has recorded three solo albums, Rings, Give and Gather, and most recently, Yellow Flowers After. The "Kim Richmond/Clay Jenkins Ensemble" has recorded two albums, Range and Look at the Time. His music has received positive reviews from critics and artists alike. Chuck Berg of Jazz Times calls Clay "one of today's brightest trumpet voices." Chick Corea stated that "Clay's music is warm and engaging." The latest release is described by critic Larry Nash as "unpredictable music, thoughtfully conceived and artfully executed."
Clay plays the "New French Besson," produced by Boosey and Hawkes, Inc., and represents this company as a Performing Artist.
