From the early 1940s onward, “Bebop” began to expand improvisational elements of the swing bands. Under more difficult melodies, harmony became more sophisticated by way of chords being altered and substituted and the rhythm sections became more involved with melodic interplay. Although most influential bebop bands were smaller and more streamlined than those of the swing era, there was also a big band style that developed out of this genre.
