A blend of the cool jazz style with elements of the Brazilian samba. Samba tends to be raucous and cool jazz subdued, so the result was a delicate propulsive rhythm feel with sophisticated jazz-like chords and clever, singable melodies. Hence, the term bossa nova (read “new beat”).
Samba
iIn the 1970s, the authentic Brazilian samba started to take root in jazz. Unlike, the more subdued classic bossa nova, samba is more celebratory and connected to Brazil's African/Portuguese past. As a result, jazz sambas generally have a more up-tempo and aggressive feel although the harmonies can have the complexity of Bebop.
