Yet another school of jazz was percolating in the 50s and 60s and it was known as “Hard Bop”. Although an obvious extension of bebop, it moved away from standard song forms emphasizing original composition. Rhythm sections became more powerful and groove oriented and there was a movement, in some cases, for turning back to the blues sound. At the same time, there were musicians exploring a whole new harmonic approach to playing bebop called “modal” improvisation, a distant cousin of the original blues forms.
