“Fusion” has often been described as the mixing of jazz with rock styles, although most jazz-fusion at first came from the rhythm and harmonies of soul music, particularly James Brown and Sly Stone. Out of these more static harmonic structures emerged something called “modal” improvising which many jazz players, e.g., Miles Davis and John Coltrane, started to use in jazz settings.
